Time To Upgrade To The Best Digital Camera?
May 28, 2009
People are asking me on a regular basis if they should buy a Canon or a Nikon digital camera. The answer of which is the best digital camera depends on what you want to do with it.
For hobbyists like me, maybe the more important thing is to find the best camera deal without compromising much of the quality. This is why I went for the 8-megapixel Evolt E500 digital SLR camera with 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko lenses.
Nikon and Canon fans are fierce rivals when they talk about digital SLR cameras. It’s pretty much like rivalries between DC Comics and Marvel, or Windows and Apple users, Blackberry and Palm. Because they’re such fanatics about it, their fights sometimes appear in newspapers, and people end up believing one article or another, even though it’s not the entire truth. In fact, these cameras are not that different and there is also no clear winner when it comes to photography.
Price is never the only attribute to consider. Some knowledge of the product is essential. In the case of digital cameras, there is a ton characteristics you could evaluate. Fortunately, looking at all characteristics is not necessary.
We also loved how the rear LCD controls can access pretty much everything from exposure to flash speed to ISO, making it more user-friendly especially for newbie SLR users like me.
Still, there are always a few differences between different models of cameras. In some cases the differences are big, in other cases small. One example would be the use of CCD sensors in Nikon cameras, while Canon models have CMOS.
While Canon uses a motor for each lens, Nikon has a single motor with autofocus in the camera. Something that Nikon doesn’t have and Canon does is a system that uses vibration to clean the dust from sensors.
My own preferences, based on my own experience is for Nikon, but I have used a D200 camera for a long time so that’s my experience. At the same time, my father in law owns a Canon 20D digital camera and he also thinks its the best camera.
They’ve got more wiggle room with their pricing then they’ll ever admit. Follow these steps, and in no time at all you’ll be snapping future Pulitzer prize winning photos, at a better price than most.
